How To Clean Composite Decking
Things You Will Need:
- Stiff Brush
- Warm Soapy Water
- Power Washer or Hose
To Clean Your Composite Decking:
1. Prepare Your Decking
Start by removing any outdoor furniture from your deck. If you can see fallen leaves or loose debris on the surface, use your stiff brush to sweep it away. This should expose the top of your deck boards ready for cleaning.
2. Create Soapy Solution
Fill a bucket with hot water and add your chosen decking cleaner. If your composite decking is very dirty, you’ll need to use a stronger cleaning solution. If your decking is quite clean you should be able to use a mild detergent.
3. Apply Solution and Scrub
Tip the cleaning solution all over your deck and start scrubbing with your stiff brush. As you work the solution into the decking, the dirt and grime will lift away. Scrub in the direction of the grain for optimal cleaning. If the dirt is stubborn, you should leave the cleaning solution to soak into the boards before scrubbing.
4. Rinse the Dirt Away
Now that all the dirt has lifted from the surface of the boards, you can simply wash it away using a power washer or hose. Once all the soapy water has drained away, you should be left with sparkling clean deck boards.
Following this composite decking cleaning routine once a year will preserve your boards and keep them looking great all year round.
Additional Cleaning Tips
Stubborn Stains
Our composite decking is capped with a polymer resin which makes it highly resistant to stains. However, if you do notice a stubborn stain on one of your deck boards, you can treat it with a strong soapy solution. As the boards weather, the stains will fade.
Mildew Build-Up
If your composite decking has been laid with the right amount of spacing for drainage, then the chances of a mildew build-up are very small. However, if your deck is damp & covered in leaves, mildew could start to form. Keep your decking clean and dry and follow this composite decking cleaning regime regularly to prevent mildew.
